Most men fear giving anniversary gifts. My best friend David is a perfect example. He begins worrying about what to give his wife almost a month prior to the anniversary. As a wedding and event planner, I am subject to more than my fair share of indignation and madness. You see, until people plan their first wedding, they never think about how much weddings cost. They want to have affordable weddings, yet they also want to have all of the glitz and glamor. The problem is that, even if you buy a low-cost bridal gown, are frugal on the wedding cake, cheap bridesmaid dresses, and all the rest, it still adds up to a lot of money. The bottom line is that, if you want to have an affordable wedding, you have to be willing to make sacrifices.

I am not saying that having affordable weddings is impossible. If you’re willing to have a small wedding ceremony with only a few of your very closest friends there, you can do it for quite a sensible price. The problem is that, if having affordable weddings is your aim, you’ve got to plan everything around it. That means that you have to have a small guest list, make reservations at an inexpensive place, have an affordable wedding gown, rent a tuxedo for the groom, and generally skimp and save at every chance. Some of my clients have actually taken their own wedding photos to save on the cost of hiring a photographer!

When I married over five years ago, I had heard of a wedding gift registry, but I didn’t know what it was for. When my maid of honor suggested that I do make one, I had to admit that I clueless. She told me that I go to a store of my pick, and ask if they have a gift registry. If they do, they will give me all the information that I need. Even though I felt awkward about it, I did it anyway.

I’m not sure why. but the thought of a wedding gift registry leaves me cold. Though many of the people that I know have used one, and people that want to buy you a gift welcome them- I felt it was something that I didn’t need. My hubby and I had been a couple for quite awhile before we wed, and it wasn’t like we needed very much for our home. It also felt to me like I was telling people what to buy me. I know this is the whole idea behind a wedding gift registry, but it left me feeling very uncomfortable. In the end, I don’t think I told many people that it was even there.
